- 0x2002(INVALID_FIELD: A reserved coded value or an unsupported value in a defined field)
第8位表示年份,2008-Q、09-S、10-Z、11-B、12-C、13-D、14-F、15-G、16-H、17-J、18-K、19-M、20-N、21-R、22-T、23-W;
Made in Korea: A C E G J S(0-3) W
Made in China: B F X (SA)
Made in Thailand: M Z
Made in Vietnam: L U
--- Translated with DeepL ---
TLDR: Following are the beginning 8 bits of the serial number of each model with known hit cases, usually happened when the write volume < 15T, most are manifactured in 2021 (so the eighth digit is mainly R), but there still exists a few cases in 2020 (i.e. the eighth digit is N), 2022 (i.e. the eighth digit is T) and 2023 (i.e. the eighth digit is W)
Because it involves several models and different generations of controllers, e.g. PM9A1 also covers the factory firmware 7301Q / 7401Q and various OEM firmware batches, we can temporarily determine that there is little correlation with the controller and firmware, but it is still recommended to upgrade your SSD to the latest firmware
PM9A1: S63JNF0R / S63JNX0T / S64JNE0R / S64SNE0R / S65XNF0R / S675NF0R / S676NF0R / S676NX0R / S677NF0R / S6W7NF0R (S677NF0R is most affected)
PM1733: S4YPNA0R (very rare, estimated winning rate < 0.5% based on AFR statistics)
870 EVO: S5Y2NJ0N / S5Y2NJ0R / S5Y3NF0R / S5Y3NG0R / S621NG0R / S625NJ0R / S626NF0R / S626NJ0R / S626NX0R / S62BNJ0R / S62CNF0R / S62CNJ0R / S6BANJ0R / S6BBNG0R / S6BCNG0R / S6BCNJ0R / S6PNNJ0R / S6PTNJ0R / S6PTNZ0R / S6PUNF0R / S6PXNJ0R
970 EVO: S464NB0K / S465NF0K / S466NF0K / S466NX0K / S466NX0M / S5H7NS0N / S5H9NS0N
970 EVO PLUS: S6P7NG0R / S6P7NF0T / S6P1NS0W
980: S649NF0R / S649NF1R / S649NG0R / S649NJ0R / S649NX0R / S64ANG0R / S64DNF0R
980 PRO: S5GXNF0R / S5GXNF0T / S5GXNG0N / S5GYNX0R / S69ENF0R / S69ENG0R / S6B0NC0R / S6B0NG0R
990 PRO: S6Z1NJ0T
It is recommended that people who have SSDs with serial numbers in the above range but SMART does not report 0E also use Samsung Magician to do a full diagnostic scan at least once, because there're reported cases that 0E counts increased only after the scan (PM9A1 and other OEM disks which can not call Magician can use DiskGenius or other softwares that have bad block detection function)
0F counts are not related to this event, please do not be anxious: the 0F count can increase even if the NVMe controller command fails to execute, and this may be due to some irrelevant reasons
For example,
- 0x2002(INVALID_FIELD: A reserved coded value or an unsupported value in a defined field)
may be triggered on every boot, simply because the command is not supported by the controller and can be ignored
Regardless of whether or not your SSDs are affected, it is recommended to use the "3-2-1 backup rule" to back up important data.
1: Create one primary backup and two copies of your data.
2: Save your backups to two different types of media.
1: Keep at least one backup file offsite.
--- Serial Number Decode ---
It is known that the beginning of S4 / S5 may also be reported 0E, so the data is for reference only.
Currently known bits of interpretation: for example, S6P7NG0R, S6 can be presumed to be the new controller version, P7 corresponds to 970 EVO PLUS 1TB, G corresponds to the South Korean production, R corresponds to 2021 production
Feel free to share your serial number, I will add them to the list if they're also affected
Add: According to the observation of a large number of PM9A1, the ninth digit of the serial number corresponds to the factory month (hexadecimal), such as S676NX0T7 factory year and month for 2022.07
Also applies to other models, such as my 980 PRO with Heatsink S6WRNS0RB corresponds to 2021.11 (11 in decimal is converted to hexadecimal is B)
The 8th and 9th bits of the S/N label of the Samsung SSD are used to indicate the production date.
The eighth bit indicates the year, 2008-Q, 09-S, 10-Z, 11-B, 12-C, 13-D, 14-F, 15-G, 16-H, 17-J, 18-K, 19-M, 20-N, 21-R, 22-T, 23-W.
The 9th digit indicates the month, 1 for January, 2 for February, 3 for March .... When it is greater than 9, it starts to be represented by a letter, A for October, B for November, C for December
The fourth bit corresponds to the capacity, such as S674 for 256G, S675 for 512G, S676 for 1024G, S677 for 2048G
The third and fourth digits of the serial number do not correspond to the same number/letter, e.g. 980 PRO 2TB corresponds to S69E, 980 PRO with Heatsink 2TB corresponds to S6WR
The sixth and seventh digits of the serial number correspond to the place of shipment, and the following letters are observed in the sixth digit.
Made in Korea: A C E G J S(0-3) W
Made in China: B F X (SA)
Made in Thailand: M Z
Made in Vietnam: L U
The seventh bit is usually 0, a few are 1-3, 850 series SA originated in China, which is suspected to be a special case (corresponding to EA originated in Korea), the exact meaning is unknown
The second digit is highly correlated with flash memory generation (the time of its appearance basically coincides with the flash memory replacement schedule), but there is still no evidence to prove that it refers to flash memory generation, and there are suspected counter-examples (e.g. 970 EVO PLUS that was shipped after August 2021 switched back to serial numbers that begin with S4, 980 PRO was mixed with S5 and S6), still need more infos
PS: Considering that the 990 PRO serial number still starts with S6 but uses V7 NAND, we can basically rule out the possibility that the second digit is flash memory generation.
