I remember walking into a BestBuy a while ago and listening to Sonos speakers a while ago. I compared it to the Bose next to it, and decided that it sounded better. Since then, I have ignored Sonos for a while, as my house filled up with Bose speakers of every size.

I have a confession to make… I tried to build a Sonos like system myself with Apple TVs, Airplay 2 and my existing Bose speakers of various sizes and shapes. It did work, but it had a lot of issues and there were too many wires, and too many speakers sitting together.

Please do not try to build a Sonos-like system by yourself. The #1 mistake which people do (I think) is to try to build a Sonos “like” system by themselves.

You will fail miserably. You will realize Sonos built it better in every single way — under cost. You will see that even if you try to do it yourself, Sonos could be the cheaper alternative. Clearly, their margins are not that high if you consider the price of a very good speaker + a mini computer to do the wireless system.

I used to think that Airplay (especially v2.0) is good. But it works mostly well only within Apple Products, and implementations from “others” like Onkyo and Sonos don’t really work as seamlessly as Sonos itself works. I faced too may problems trying to group speakers to play together, etc. Also, Apple TV does not work very well if you only use it to stream music and do not connect a TV to it.

I got this instead of the smaller Bose speakers after a visit to the Bose Store. It does have sub-bass & highs, but as you can see from the small soundbar, it has a big hole where the mid bass should be.

The legendary Bose Wave Radio IV was my favorite! It was heart wrenching to sell it. The highs are the best I had ever heard from any speaker before the MLs. The Play 5 does have a richer sound though.

I want to note that the sound quality has most definitely improved with the S2 update. All speakers sound richer, more well defined, better clarity and lesser distortion than before. It is a noticeable change! And I keep mentioning this over & over again in this article, because I am surprised how they managed to make the sound better through a software update alone.

At some point I wanted a water proof speaker in a bathroom, and after a lot of research, I found that most of the Sonos speakers are water proof (Note: The sub is not, which is sad, and which is why I keep the sub right outside the bathroom door in the bedroom).

It just blew my mind away. For the very first time, I realized what I was missing with my Bose speakers. I liked the Play 5 so much because of the rich sound that I have several Play 5’s around home, a few Play 1’s and two subs. There are days when I am honestly surprised with the amount of bass coming from the puny Play 1 speaker in one of the bathrooms!

Having dealt with the receiver + sub + speakers deal, I can say that a Sonos system and the sound it provides by auto-configuring itself to the room is a lot better experience for most people who would struggle to calibrate the speakers and the receiver to the room.

I like my sub-bass to sound natural — not amplified. In fact, I confess that I have been able to tune my “discrete” sub better by hearing how the Sonos sub is tuned to the speaker it is paired to — which really you have to hear a well tuned system, no matter how much you read about sub tuning, you won’t be able to do it, till you hear it yourself.

Bluesound does have an advantage because of the larger speakers which I know will sound better. I have tested this out myself.

It is clear, nobody really knew how to build the best wireless music system when we started. It is a problem if the speakers can no longer play music after a certain software version — not because of the music hardware, but because of the obsolete computing components within them. This is inevitable in any computing product.

June 7, 2020: I continue to compare the sound from the Play 5’s to the ML 15is and even the 30 center channel with 8i L&Rs. I continue to like the “richer” but maybe not as clear Play 5 sound. I would have gone with two Play 5’s a sub and two Play 1’s instead of my Martin Logan setup with an Onkyo AV Receiver. The reason I could not use Sonos is because I have a mini studio setup at home with an audio interface. Sonos has a delay because of the wireless technology (like all other wireless speakers), hence it cannot be used for this setup no matter how badly I wanted to use it in the beginning.

The other reason why I am glad I did not go with Sonos because the ML setup has AMT Tweeters. These are significantly better for high frequencies than regular tweeters. I know this because of the extreme realism playing back stringed instruments on AMT tweeters. I love that sound, and it helps me create the music I love with more realism.
