Hello English learners! Welcome back to my channel! My name is Ethan, and today we’re diving into a topic we deal with every day—traffic.
When I drive somewhere, I always check the traffic before I leave.
I usually use Baidu Maps for this so I can estimate how long it will take me to reach my destination.
Now, let’s talk about the word traffic.
Traffic is a noun that refers to vehicles on the road, like cars, buses, vans, and motorcycles.
If there are no vehicles on the road, we can say:
• “There’s no traffic.”(没有交通。)
• “There’s not much traffic.”(交通不多。)
• Or even, “The traffic is good.”(交通很好。)
On the other hand, if there are a lot of vehicles on the road, you can say:
• “There’s heavy traffic.”(交通很拥堵。)
• “There’s bad traffic.”(交通很糟糕。)
• Or, “There’s a lot of traffic.”(交通很繁忙。)
When the vehicles can’t move, or they’re moving very slowly, we call this a traffic jam.
Think of it this way: the vehicles are stuck, moving as slowly as jam flows out of a jar.
Before we wrap up, here are some practical example sentences to help you talk about traffic:
1. “The main road gets really congested during rush hour.”
2. “I’m driving home for the holidays this year, so I’ll leave a few days early. Otherwise, the holiday traffic will be terrible, and a two-hour trip could easily take four or five hours.”
3. “There’s been an accident two kilometers ahead, no wonder the traffic is bad today.”
4. “It’s especially important to drive carefully during traffic jams because rear-end collisions are more likely to happen.”
